We are always going somewhere. Today, I am going to California. One day I was born; another day I will die. We are all in the midst of transition from one place, one state of being to another and while we like to talk about "the path," and count on a fixed series of steps to get to our spiritual goals, a proscribed set of prayers, a specific way of meditating, a tried and true method and approach, we are often at the mercy of change that is not in our hands to control.

On the plane to California, they showed the movie Hotel Rwanda, about the Rwandan genocide. My wife and I were in tears by the end of the film. By coincidence, I have two students who are leaving for Rwanda in a few weeks to work with orphans created by the mass killings. Now you are reading these words. I say all of this only to underline the fact that in some way, while our spiritual path is a blessing, we should not confuse a smooth life in peaceful times with what it means to be spiritual.
